Balloon Flight Instructor flight under supervision

The aim of the instruction flight under supervision is to confirm continued balloon flight instructor competency to exercise the privileges of FI(B) as required by BFCL.360(a)(2).

The FI(B) instruction flight under supervision is arranged to ensure that you as an FI(B) are being supervised and demonstrating your instructor competences to the senior balloon instructor. Your competences are assessed both on the ground and during at least one flight. 

The duration of the training event is just one flight and takes aprpoximately 4 hours in total including the briefings.

Briefings

The briefing and de-briefing is a crucial part of the instructor flight under supervision. It is integrated into the long briefing of the flight exercise and taken prior to the training flight. You will be required to explain the pre-flight preparation and flying exercises which will be practiced during the training flight in the balloon.

The content of the briefings is consistent with the flight training of the BPL trainings. The more accurate topic will be given to you either on the discretion of senior balloon instructor or depending on the need of the BPL trainee enrolled in the balloon training. The pre-flight briefing and postflight debriefing takes in total approximately 3 hours.

Privileges

You as a balloon instructor holder are required to attend the instruction flight under supervision as FI(B) and demonstrate the senior instructor your continued competency to teach and exercise your FI(B) privileges. This is one of the hard regulatory requirements to keep your FI(B) valid. Should you fail to complete the instruction flight under supervision to the satisfaction of the FI(B), you are not allowed to exercise the privileges of the FI(B) certificate until you pass an assessment of competence in accordance with point BFCL.345 with the balloon flight examiner - FE(B).
