Single Engine Piston Differences training

SEP(Land) differences training

Once obtained, the privileges of your SEP(land) class rating authorizes you to fly on the single-engine variant on which the skill test with EASA examiner has been successfully passed on. You have to complete differences training or familiarisation in order to extend your SEP(land) privileges to another variant.

In other words if you have completed your training in Diamond DA20 wishing to fly with your family on Diamond DA40, you need a differences training to fly on Diamond DA-40.

Overview

SEP(land) differences training overview

The aim of the SEP(land) differences training and familiarization is to provide you with flight training or additional knowledge required to operate another SEP(land) variant considering your previous experience and skills. The aim is you to safely transition to another variant or to operate the SEP(land) aircraft with special qualification such as tailwheelvariable pitch propellerretractable undercarriage, etc. You will be required to complete flight training as a part of the differences course provided that the engine of the transitioned SEP(land) aeroplane is different then the one you are currently qualified for.

The SEP(land) differences training and familiarization is tailored-made for you, however in general it consists of following:

  • Theoretical knowledge instruction;
  • Flight training;

The SEP(land) differences training is valid permanently unless otherwise limited by particular aircraft operator. The differences training is entered into your pilot logbook and signed by the instructor or ProfiPilot Training.

Variants

All the EASA approved single-engine piston types of an aeroplanes are variants of the SEP(Land) class rating. It means that all of the well-known aircraft types such as Diamond DA20Cessna 152Cessna 172 and many others are variants of the SEP(land) class rating.

Once passed the SEP(land) skill test, your privileges are restricted to the variant in which you have passed your skill test. To fly another variant, EASA mandates you to undertake so-called differences training or familiarization depending on the complexity of the differences among the variants.

Training

The Differences training requires the acquisition of additional knowledge and flight training on the respective variant of SEP(land). It is important to mention that differences training is required for all variants and all EASA license holders. That means the differences training is mandatory  for PPL(A), CPL(A), ATPL(A) and MPL(A) holders as required by FCL.710 and GM1 FCL.710. For LAPL(A) holders the differences training is required by FCL.135(b) and GM1 FCL.135(a). That means nobody is exempted from attending the differences training.

The duration of the differences training is always tailored to your overall experience. Differences training is also mandatory when transitioning to SEP(land) variant with different qualification such as:

  • SEP(land) with variable pitch propellers (VP)
  • SEP(land) with retractable undercarriage (RU)
  • SEP(land) with turbo-charged and super-charged engines (T)
  • SEP(land) with cabin pressurisation (P)
  • SEP(land) with tail wheels (TW)
  • SEP(land) with electronic flight instrument system (EFIS)
  • SEP(land) with single lever power control (SLPC)

Familiarization

Familiarisation training requires the acquisition of additional knowledge. It means that you do not neccesarilly need the flight training for the transition to new variant. As an example of familiarization the transition from Cessna 150  to Cessna 152 can be given. In order to fly a new variant, the groundschool with an instructor should be sufficient to fly on a new variant.

Completion

The differences training or familiarization course is completed by meeting the respective learning objectives and standards for the particular variant. In other words - you have to be able to safely fly that particular aircraft variant. As a proof of course completion, the ProfiPilot Training will issue you the Course completion certificate together with logbook endorsement. The differences training nor the familliarization are endorsed in your pilot's license.
