Overview

ICAO to EASA ATPL(A) overview

The process of conversion your ICAO ATPL(A) into the EASA ATPL(A) is very simple and straight forward.

The training consists of:

  • theoretical knowledge instruction (optional)
  • on-type simulator session (skill test refresher)

The ATPL(A) conversion training is completed by the written exams and ATPL(A) Skill test with EASA Type Rating Examiner.

Prerequisites

To convert your ICAO ATPL(A) into EASA ATPL(A) you have to meet following criteria:

  • hold a valid ICAO ATPL(A)
  • have a valid type rating endorsed in your ICAO ATPL
  • have completed at least 500 hours of flight time in that type

In addition you have to meet the minimum experience requirements to issue an EASA ATPL(A) of 1500 hours including at least:

  • 500 hours in multi-pilot operations on aeroplanes;
  • 500 hours as PIC under supervision; or
    • 250 hours as PIC; or
    • 250 hours, including at least 70 hours as PIC, and the remaining as PIC under supervision;
  • 200 hours of cross-country flight time of which at least 100 hours shall be as PIC or as PIC under supervision;
  • 75 hours of instrument time of which not more than 30 hours may be instrument ground time; and
  • 100 hours of night flight as PIC or co-pilot.

Of the 1500 hours of flight time, up to 100 hours of flight time may have been completed in an FFS and FNPT. Of these 100 hours, only a maximum of 25 hours may be completed in an FNPT.

Procedure

The procedure to obtain the EASA Airline Transport Pilot Licence based on your ICAO ATPL(A) consists of following steps:

  1. be at least 21 years old
  2. pass 14 written exams at  Exam institute
  3. obtain an EASA Class 1 Medical Certificate
  4. undergo simulator training at ProfiPilot Academy with Type Instructor
  5. pass an ICAO English language proficiency assessment with Aero Language
  6. pass an IR English language proficiency assessment with Aero Language
  7. pass a ATPL(A) skill test along with your Type Rating Skill test with EASA Type Examiner in simulator
  8. submit all paperwork to the EASA National Aviation Authority (NAA) and apply for your new EASA ATPL(A) licence with your type rating.

Training

The training is trailored-made to your current experience and skills. It also serves as the skill test refresher before an EASA ATPL(A) skill test with Type Rating Examiner.

Theoretical knowledge instruction consists of following subjects:

  • air law;
  • aircraft general knowledge — airframe/systems/power plant, instrumentation;
  • mass and balance;
  • performance;
  • flight planning and monitoring;
  • human performance;
  • meteorology;
  • general navigation;
  • radio navigation;
  • operational procedures;
  • principles of flight; and
  • communications.

Privileges

By obtaining the EASA ATPL(A) you will become EASA-recognised airline pilot with the respective type rating. So you will be authorised to fly the multi-pilot aircraft as a Captain.

The privileges of the holder of an ATPL(A) holder are to:

  • exercise all the privileges of the holder of an LAPL(A), a PPL(A) and a CPL(A);
  • act as a pilot-in-command of aircraft engaged in commercial air transport (CAT).
