The Part FCL requires a pilot to have an instrument experience to obtain Airline Transport Pilot Licence. There is one exemption made specifically for a helicopter pilots having enough flight time to operate as pilot-in-command on multi-pilot helicopters, however not flying an IFR flights

The ATPL(H) can also be obtained without holding the instrument rating and with no instrument experience. To proceed the path towards the ATPL(H) VFR, you need to undertake the theoretical training course.

Overview

ATPL(H) VFR theory course overview

The Airline Transport Pilot VFR theoretical knowledge instruction course consists of approximately 550 hours of instruction. The aim of the course is to understand and apply the subject knowledge in order to be able to identify and manage threats and errors effectively and to meet the Area 100 KSA minimum standard.

ProfiPilot Training utilizes the distance learning means of the instruction supplemented by the classroom instructor-led instruction.

The ATPL(H) VFR theoretical course is followed by the ATPL(H) VFR written exam in Exam Institute

Scheme

To be enrolled into the Airline Transport Pilot theoretical knowledge instruction you have to be a holder of at least an aeroplane Private Pilot Licence issued in accordance with ICAO Annex 1. The duration of the course depends on your experience.

Ab-initio ATPL(H) ground school instruction for PPL(H) holders lasts 550 hours. Approximately 90% of the training is delivered by distance-learning means. The remaining 10% of training is used as brush-up and review during the instructor-led classroom instruction. ProfiPilot Training provides also the online classrooms.

The duration of the course is adjusted to your experience:

  • holders of PPL(H): 550 hours;
  • holders of CPL(H): 300 hours.

Completion

Once you have completed all the required subjects, you will have to pass the written final tests in ProfiPilot Training. To be recommended for ATP written exam you have to pass all subjects with minimum pass rate of 75%.

The ATPL(H) VFR theory course is followed by the written theoretical knowledge exam at Exam Institute. You have to start your ATPL(H) written exam latest 12 months after being recommended by ProfiPilot Training.

You have to pass with minimum score of at least 75% all subjects of ATPL(H) VFR theoretical syllabus within four attempts, and within either six sittings or within the period of 18 months.

Future

The ATPL(H) theory credit restricted to VFR covers theoretical knowledge requirements for all EASA aeroplane flight crew licences excluding the instrument rating. Once passed the theoretical knowledge examination for an airline transport pilot licence you will be credited with the theoretical knowledge requirements for the light aircraft pilot licence, the private pilot licence, the commercial pilot licence (helicopters).

Your ATPL theory credit stays valid for 36 months for the issue of a commercial pilot licence counted from the day when you have successfully completed the theoretical knowledge examination. 

The completion of the airline transport pilot licence (ATPL) theoretical knowledge examinations will remain valid for the issue of an ATPL for a period of 7 years from the last validity date of a helicopter’s type rating entered in that licence.
