Multi Engine Piston Land

One more engine in your licence ✔️

Multi-engine piston class rating or so-called MEP(land) allows you to fly on multi-engine single-pilot aeroplane. This training is a natural step for a future professional pilot on the Frozen ATPL training path. For a leisure pilot the MEP(land) class rating is a nice to have. Nevertheless if you are an aircraft owner or looking to purchase beauties such as Diamond DA42 or similar category, holding the MEP(land) class rating is a must.

By holding the MEP(land) class rating you will be authorized to fly on Diamond DA42Piper 34 SenecaTecnam P2006T and many others.

Overview

MEP(land) training overview

The aim of the MEP(land) initial class rating training course is to provide the sufficient amount of theoretical knowledge instruction and flight training to be able to fly as a pilot-in-command on the particular variant representing MEP(land) aircraft. You will become proficient in the operation of multi-engine single pilot aeroplane ever with one-engine inoperative.

The MEP(land) Class Rating training course consists of three parts:

  • 7 hours of General multi-engine groundschool;
  • 3 hours of Variant-related ground school
  • 6 hours Flight training;

The MEP(land) initial class rating training is followed by the MEP(land) skill test with EASA Class Rating Examiner. The validity of the MEP(land) is 1 year. To revalidate your MEP(and) you need to comply with FCL.740.A(a).

Prerequisites

As an applicant for MEP(land) class rating you have to be a holder of the EASA flight crew license such as PPL(A)CPL(A) or ATPL(A).

In addition you have to be holder of respective medical certificate corresponding to your license. As a PPL(A) holder seeking for MEP(land) class rating you need to be holder of at least Medical Class II. For the initial issue of multi-engine class rating you have to meet FCL.720.A(a)(1) - completed at least 70 hours as pilot-in-command in aeroplanes (e.g. in single-engine aeroplane)

Theory

MEP(land) theoretical knowledge instruction or so-called MEP(land) groundschool is provided before you start the actual flight training. The theoretical knowledge course consists of two modules.  First module deals with general  multi-engine operation and includes 7 hours of instruction in multi-engine aeroplane operations and covers following topics:

  • Aviation legislation
  • Asymmetric flight
  • Principles of flight
  • Control in asymmetric flight
  • Minimum control and safety speeds
  • Performance in asymmetric flight

Additional hours are focused on the variant-related theoretical knowledge instruction such as:

  • General description and differences
  • Engine
  • Aircraft systems
  • Flight instruments
  • Cockpit, cabin and cargo
  • Emergency equipment
  • Limitations
  • Load and balance
  • Emergency procedures
  • EFIS (if applicable)

The theoretical knowledge examination is verified in written at the end of the theory course.

Flying

The MEP(land) flight training lasts 6 hours and consists of the sessions required to gain the skills for the safe operation of multi-engine aircraft. During 2 hours and 30 minutes you will master the normal conditions of multi engine aeroplane operations such as traffic patterns and normal maneouvers. Additional 3 hours 30 minutes of will be focused on acing the engine failure procedures and asymmetric flight techniques. You will learn how to manage the engine faillure after take-off (EFATO), in-flight engine shutdown (IFESD) and how to land with one engine inoperative (OEI).

At the later stage you we will ace together the non-normal and emergency procedures including the  A/C handling with different systems malfunctions. This will include emergency flight patterns and the engine failure procedures at various position and situation. You will be able to bring the  multi-engine aeroplane safely to the ground even with one-engine inoperative.

You will understand how the basics of the see-saw can be applied to the multi-engine flying and why the blue line is so important on ASI.

Completion

The MEP(Land) training course is completed by the class rating skill test with an EASA examiner in accordance with Appendix 9 to Part FCL. The purpose is to demonstrate the skills required for the safe operation as pilot-in-command of the multi engine piston aircraft. You have to keep in mind, that the skill test has to be passed within a period of 6 months after commencement of the class rating training course and within a period of 6 months preceding the application for the issue of the class rating at your supervising authority.

Once obtained, your MEP(land) class rating will be valid for 12 months and your privileges will be limited to the variant (e.g. DA42) in which you have passed MEP(land) skill test.
