Class Rating MEP Land

Multi-engine class rating

Multi-engine piston or so-called MEP(land) class rating is advanced rating into your pilot's license. For majority of the leisure pilots it is kind of "nice to have" rating. However for the pilots aiming for a professional career it is a must. By obtaining the MEP(Land) class rating you will be authorized to fly as a pilot-in-command on an aeroplane constituting into the MEP(land) class rating in accordance VFR. To extend your MEP(land) privileges to fly IFR, you have to undertake additional flight training in ProfiPilot Training and checking with EASA Examiner.

We can generally say that all the EASA approved multi-engine piston aeroplanes are variants of the MEP(Land) class rating. Variant in this case means the particular aircraft type. However EASA does not require you to attend the specific so-called type rating for each particular type of multi-engine aeroplane. To avoid the additional long-lasting type rating training Part FCL established single class rating which allows you to fly on all MEP(land) aeroplanes. So when it comes to the multi-engine aeroplanes, we are calling them variants instead of types

Class rating MEP(land) allows you to fly on the multi-engine piston aeroplanes with a maximum take-off weight of 5,700kg. The variants specifically constituted into MEP(Land) are usually not explicitly listed in EASA class rating endorsement list.

Common EASA MEP(land) class rating varians are following:

  • Manufacturer Let: Let 200 Morava, L200A, L200D
  • Manufacturer Diamond Aircraft Industries: Diamond DA-42 Twin Star DA42NG, DA42-VI
  • Manufacturer Piper: Piper PA-34 Seneca, PA-44 Seminole
  • Manufacturer Tecnam: P2006T
  • Manufacturer Cessna: Cessna 414, 421, etc
  • and many more

Extension of MEP(land) privileges

Your privileges to fly on particular variant are limited to the variant in which you have passed your MEP(land) skill test. To extend your privileges to another variant, you have to undertake the differences training within ProfiPilot Training.

EASA established mandatory differences training when transitioning from one MEP(land) variant to another (e.g. from Cessna 421 to Diamond č2). Based on the differences levels ProfiPilot Training will provide you with adequate differences training to meet the learning objectives thus to safely fly on the particular aeroplane.

MEP(land) Validity

Once obtained, the validity of your MEP(land) Class Rating is 12 months.

Revalidation of MEP(land)

During the validity period of the MEP(land) class rating, you also have to comply with FCL.740.A(a)(2), namely - to complete during the period of validity of the class rating, at least:

  • 10 route sectors as pilot on the variant that represents the MEP(land) class rating; or
  • 1 route sector as pilot on the variant that represents the MEP(land) class rating, flown with an examiner. This route sector may be flown during the MEP(land) proficiency check.
