Comparison

Flight training towards the modular single-engine instrument rating is provided in the in aeroplane constituting into the SEP(land) class rating. It is the natural step for those already being on the track towards Frozen ATPL. In addition it is a cheapest option how to become instrument rated. The price difference compared to the ab-initio IR multi-engine is significantly lower.

On the other hand - flying single-engine in IMC brings a lot of threats. One of the most dangerous one is a in-flight engine failure in IMC. Additionally, most of the single-engine aeroplanes are not de-iced which brings additional operational limitations.
