Competency Instrument Rating

Competency-based Instrument Rating

The aim of the competency-based instrument rating training course is to train private pilot PPL(A) or commercial pilot CPL(A) holders for the instrument rating, taking into account prior instrument flight instruction and instrument flight experience. It is designed to provide the level of proficiency needed to operate aeroplanes under IFR and in IMC. The CB-IR training course consist of a combination of instrument flight training provided by an instrument instructor - IRI(A) or an FI(A) and flight instruction within a ProfiPilot Training.

The Competency-based instrument rating course of theoretical knowledge instruction shall be completed within 18 months. The instrument flight training and the IR skill test shall be completed within the period of validity of the theoretical knowledge examinations.

The Competency-based Instrument rating training course at ProfiPilot Training comprises of:

  • theoretical knowledge instruction to the IR(A) knowledge level;
  • instrument flight training.

Competency-based approach to the Instrument Rating training is the fastest and enjoyable way how to get instrument-rated with previous IR experience.

Instrument rating privileges

The privileges of the instrument rating obtained by the means of the competency-based training are equal to the privileges of the instrumennt rating obtained by the conventional modular means.

The privileges of competency-based instrument-rated pilot are to fly aircraft under IFR, including PBN operations, with a minimum decision height of no less than 200 feet (60 m) and minimum runway visual range (RVR) of 550m.

Instrument rating for private pilots

Competency based instrument rating is quite common way how to obtain full EASA instrument rating. Most of the leisure pilots are enjoying their natural progress towards the instrument rating competency. This is done by gaining the experience thru the different options allowed by Part-FCL.

The first step is attending some instrument flying with an instrument instructor during the business or leisure flights. This flying usually constitutes into getting the EASA en-route instrument rating - so-called EIR(A) or national equivalents such as VMC over the top or Instrument Rating Restricted.

This instrument flying usually leads to the competency based instrument rating training to obtain full EASA Instrument rating. It simply enhances the safety and brings much more freedom when it comes to the operational usability.

Instructors from ProfiPilot Training have extensive experience in delivering competency-based training to the private individuals such as aeroplane owners or businessmen while flying to their business trips. You can be sure we know how to get you up to the standard you need for safe and solo instrument flying.

Instrument rating for professional pilots

 Future professional pilots usually opt for the competency based instrument-rating in cases when the instrument rating is contained in their ICAO pilot's license. Quite common are the cases to obtain the instrument rating in USA and transfer it to the EASA instrument rating by using the means of competency-based instrument rating. Although this is not really the best option for the future airline pilot. By attending your competency-based training in ProfiPilot Training you will get the best instrument rating training you can have for your future professional career.

Revalidation of Instrument Rating

There is no difference in privileges or validity period of the instrument rating obtained by the competency-based means compared to the conventional means. Once obtained the Instrument rating is valid for 12 months. To revalidate an instrument rating, you have to comply with FCL.625.A and you have to pass a proficiency check with an EASA Class Rating Examiner or Instrument Rating Examiner
