By attending the Instrument Rating Multi-Engine training course you will obtain the privileges in accordance with FCL.600.IR(a) - to fly the multi-engine aeroplane under IFR, including PBN operations, with a minimum decision height of no less than 200 feet (60 m). The modular instrument rating training is focused on understanding and properly flying the world-wide recognized procedures designed in accordance with ICAO Doc 8168 with multi-engine aeroplane.

Multi-engine instrument rating is mandatory if you are tracking modular Frozen ATPL ✓ training path. On-board procedures during the Multi-engine operation are similar to the public transport aeroplane. If you choose a multi-engine aeroplane for your training you will benefit from more complex procedures associated with retractable landing gear, higher approach speeds, variable pitch propeller, multi-engine operation, etc.

EASA Instrument Rating Multi Engine modular training course consists of two instrument modules for a total of 55 flight hours if you are not Commercial Pilot License – CPL(A) holder, yet or 45 hours if you are already a CPL(A) holder. So-called Basic instrument flight module and Procedural instrument flight module are complementary to each other. All is flown in multi-engine aeroplane constituting into the MEP(land) class rating.

The EASA Instrument Rating training is followed by the IR Skill test with EASA Instrument Rating Examiner.  The validity of the multi-engine Instrument Rating is 1 year. To revalidate your Instrument Rating you need to comply with FCL.625.IR(b).

Prerequisites

As an applicant for multi-engine Instrument Rating you have to be a holder of the EASA flight crew license such as PPL(A) or CPL(A). You also have be either a holder or to fulfill the training requirements for the multi-engine class rating on which the instrument rating training will be provided including the differences training. It means you need to be a holder of MEP(land) with differences training on the particular MEP(land) variant such as Diamond DA42 or Tecnam P2006T. You also have to be a holder of theoretical knowledge course completion certificate. This means you had to attend either instrument rating or airline transport pilot theoretical knowledge instruction course.

In addition, you have to meet following requirements:

  • be a holder of valid Medical Certificate Class 1 or Class 2 with IR privileges (audiogram)
  • be a holder of VFR Night Rating
  • completed at least 50 hours of cross-country flight time as pilot-in-command

BIFM

The Basic Instrument Flight Module is early stage of an instrument rating training. BIFM consists of 10 hours of instrument time with an instructor of which up to 5 hours can be instrument ground time in a simulator.  At least 5 hours of BIFM has to be in aeroplane. The basic instrument flight module covers the basic handling of an aircraft under the IMC as well as the upset prevention and recovery training. Following training areas are covered:

  • basic instrument flight without external visual cues
  • instrument pattern
  • steep turn;
  • radio navigation;
  • recovery from unusual attitudes;
  • limited panel;
  • recognition and recovery from incipient and full stalls;

PIFM

Procedural Instrument Flight Module is the advanced part of instrument flight and comprises the remainder of the training syllabus for of the modular instrument rating training. PIFM flight instruction consists of 45 hours of single-engine instrument time under instruction of which up to 30 hours of PIFM can be instrument ground time in FNPT II. Minimum 15 hours out of 45 shall be in MEP(land) aeroplane - e.g. Diamond DA42 or Tecnam P2006T under the instruction with an IR instructor.

PIFM flight training is focused on understanding and correctly flown IFR-related procedures. In addition the PIFM training is focused also on the pre-flight procedures for IFR flights, including the use of the flight manual and appropriate air traffic services documents in the preparation of an IFR flight plan. Flying part of the PIFM covers the procedures and manoeuvres for IFR operation under normal, abnormal and emergency conditions including inoperative engine covering at least:

  • transition from visual to instrument flight on take-off,
  • standard instrument departures (SID) and arrivals (STAR),
  • en-route IFR procedures,
  • holding procedures,
  • instrument approaches to specified minima covering ILS, VOR-DME, LOC-DME, NDB and RNP
  • missed approach procedures,
  • landings from instrument approaches, including circling;
  • in-flight manoeuvres and particular flight characteristics;

Comparison

The main reason to opt for multi-engine aeroplane for your instrument rating training is the enhanced safety. In the event of an engine failure in IMC or at night it is possible to land the aircraft safely with only one working engine. The disadvantage is about doubled price compared to the single engine IR.
