Single Engine Piston Land initial training

SEP(land) class rating ✓

Single-engine piston class rating or so-called SEP(land) is perhaps the most common class rating issued in EASA pilot's license. By holding SEP(land) you will be able to enjoy and share the beauty of flying with others. The SEP(land) class rating allows you to fly on most-common single-engine airplanes such as Cessna 172 ✓ or Diamond DA-40 ✓ This training is mostly for retired airline pilots who were flying airliners all their professional life or for those of you coming to EASA region from other ICAO member state.

It is important to mention that this training is not required if you are currently undertaking the EASA PPL(A) training. By obtaining the PPL(A) you will get your SEP(land) together as one package.

Overview

SEP(land) training overview

The aim of the SEP(land) initial class rating training course is to provide the sufficient amount of theoretical knowledge instruction and flight training to be able to fly as a pilot-in-command on the particular variant representing SEP(land) aircraft.

The SEP(land) Class Rating training course consists of two parts complementary to eachother:

  • Theoretical knowledge instruction;
  • Flight training;

The SEP(land) initial class rating training is followed by the SEP(land) skill test with EASA Class Rating Examiner. The validity of the SEP(land) is 2 years. To revalidate your SEP(and) you need to comply with FCL.740.A(b).

Theory

SEP(land) theoretical knowledge instruction or so-called SEP(land) groundschool is merged with the longbriefings. The scope and duration of groundschool is adjusted to the complexity of the SEP(land) variant used for the flight training. Content is adjusted by an course instructor. Generally it contains following topics:

  • General description and differences
  • Engine
  • Aircraft systems
  • Flight instruments
  • Cockpit, cabin and cargo
  • Emergency equipment
  • Limitations
  • Load and balance
  • Emergency procedures
  • EFIS (if applicable)

The theoretical knowledge examination is done verbally by the EASA Examiner during the skill test to determine whether or not a satisfactory level of knowledge has been achieved during the training.

Flying

The SEP(land) flight training consists of the sessions required to gain the skills for the safe operation of single-engine aircraft.

In the first part of the training you will learn more about normal operations which consists of:

  • flight procedures,
  • Normal flight patterns
  • A/C handling characteristics in different configurations
  • traffic patterns, take-offs and landings.

At the later stage you we will ace together the non-normal and emergency procedures including the  A/C handling with different systems malfunctions. This will include emergency flight patterns and the engine failure procedures at various position and situation. You will be able to bring the single engine aeroplane safely to the ground even with engine failure
