Type Instructor TRI

Type Rating Instructor

To provide any kind of the mentoring towards the type-related trainings, you need to become a Type Rating Instructor. Abbreviated format TRI has to be further specified with the types of aeroplanes you are qualified as an instructor for. Since 2020, the European regulatory concept specifies further the TRI privileges into two main categories.

TRI Training concept

The TRI training course develops safety awareness throughout by imparting knowledge, skills, and attitudes relevant to the TRI task. The TRI Training program is designed to adequately train the candidate instructor in theoretical-knowledge instruction, flight instruction, and FSTD instruction to enable the candidate instructor to instruct others on an aeroplane type rating for which the candidate instructor is qualified.

The TRI(A) training course should place particular emphasis on the role of the individual, human factors in the man–machine environment, and CRM.

Special attention should be given to the candidate instructor’s maturity and judgment including their understanding of adults, behavioural attitudes, and variable levels of learning ability. During the training course, the candidate instructor should be made aware of their own attitude towards the importance of flight safety.

Ab-initio Type Rating Instructor training consists of three parts.

  • Part 1: Teaching and learning  AMC1 FCL.920;
  • Part 2: Technical theoretical knowledge instruction (technical training);
  • Part 3: Flight instruction.

The Teaching and Learning module can be attended indenpendently on the TRI course. Should you are a holder of any EASA instructor certificate - e.g. MCCI or TRI, you will be fully exempted from attending the Teaching and learning module.

Part 2 and Part 3 are complementary to eachother. Duration of Part 3 depends on if you are already a holder of TRI(A). For ab-initio TRI(A) training the Part 3 lasts 10 hours.

For TRI(A) the Part 3 lasts 10 hours in simulator

Privileges

The Type Rating Instructor certificate allows you to provide training for:

  • issue, revalidation and renewal of the type-related instrument rating
  • the issue of a TRI or SFI certificate, provided you completed at least 50 hours of instruction as TRI
  • the issue, revalidation and renewal of type ratings for the typerating you are qualified for as TRI
  • as a holder of TRI(MPA) you will also be allowed to provide MCC training (equivalent of MCCI privileges) and MPL training

Limitations

Generally your privileges will be restricted to provide FSTD part of the typerating training course. The restriction to FSTD willl be removed if you complete an TRI assessment of competence in the aircraft.

Unrestricted TRI

The holder of Unrestricted TRI is authorised to provide in-flight training in the real aeroplane. This is essentially important in case of the aeroplanes where flight simulator does not exists or its access is limited. In such cases, the combination of flight training in aeroplane and some simulator training is being applied. To provide the in-flight instruction, an instructor has to be a holder of TRI unrestricted. This concept is usually applied in case of light bizjets such as Cessna 525Raytheon RA390 and others. The unrestricted TRI does not really apply for multi-pilot aeroplanes as there is no need for the in-flight training.

Restricted TRI

Upon completion of the TRI training course you will be a holder of TRI with your privileges being restricted to instruction in simulator only. This equals theSFI privileges. To extend the privileges, further training is rquired for delivering the LIFUS and langing training on the particular type of aeroplane.

Even after attending the TRI privileges extension training, you will still be a holder of TRI restricted to FSTD, LIFUS and Landing training.

The restrictions of the TRI privileges are annotated on the license under ‘Remarks and Restrictions’ against the appropriate TRI certificate, along with the following endorsements:

  • if the training is carried out in an FSTD: ‘TRI/r’ (r=restricted);
  • if the TRI training, as specified in point FCL.910.TRI(a)(1), includes the LIFUS training: endorsement as per point (a) and ‘LIFUS’; and
  • if the landing training, as specified in point FCL.910.TRI(a)(2), is included in the TRI training course: endorsement as per point (a) and ‘LT’ (LT = landing training).

For example a TRI restricted with LIFUS and landing training privileges will have on their license the following endorsement: ‘TRI/r LIFUS LT’.

TRI Validity

The validity of your Type Rating Instructor certificate is 3 years.

Revalidation

To revalidate an TRI(A) certificate, you have to fulfill at least two out of the three following requirements before the expiry date of the TRI certificate:

  • conduct one of the parts of a complete type rating or recurrent training course: simulator session of at least 3 hours or one air exercise of at least 1 hour comprising a minimum of two take-offs and landings;
  • complete instructor refresher training as a TRI(A) at an ATO;
  • pass a TRI assessment of competence with TRE
