Instrument Rating Refresher

IR(A) renewal procedure ✓

Once expired, your Instrument Rating needs to be renewed before resuming IFR flying. You generally have to attend refresher training with ProfiPilot Academy followed by the LPC with an EASA Examiner. However there are also exemptions when you do not need to attend any refresher training at all.

The instrument rating renewal may be combined with your class rating renewal. Thus if your MEP(land)/IR is expired, we can combine your renewal for both ratings and merge it into one single refresher training and checking.

Nevertheless there is one important number to remember. You have to renew the validity of your instrument rating in no more than 7 years after its last expiry date. Otherwise you will have to attend your ATPL theory exams or IR theory exams all-over.

Overview

Training overview IR Renewal

The validity of your Instrument Rating is always 1 year. If an instrument rating becomes expired, in order to renew its privileges, you have to complete a refresher training at ProfiPilot Training to reach the level of proficiency required for instrument rating holder.

The EASA Instrument Rating renewal procedure is followed by the IR proficiency check with EASA Instrument Rating Examiner. The IR proficiency check may be combined with a proficiency check performed for the renewal of the class rating.

Prerequisites

As an applicant for Instrument Rating renewal you have to be a holder of the EASA flight crew license such as PPL(A) or CPL(A) or ATPL(A). Obviously, you were a holder of an instrument rating in the past. In addition you are either a holder of current class rating - e.g. SEP(land) or MEP(land) or the renewal of the class rating will be connected to the instrument rating renewal.

Essentially important requirement is to be a holder of valid theoretical credit. This means, your last instrument rating (any type-related or class-related) expiry date is less than 7 years. If the IR has not been revalidated or renewed in the preceding 7 years, you have to pass again the IR theoretical knowledge exams and IR skill test.

Refresher

The amount and scope of IR refresher training will be determined by ProfiPilot Academy on a case-by-case basis, taking into account the following factors:

  • your previous experience;
  • the amount of time elapsed since the privileges of the instrument rating were last used;
  • the complexity of the aircraft e.g. SEP(land) or MEP(land);
  • whether you are instrument-current on another aircraft type or class; and

To assess your instrument rating proficiency we usually carry on with simulated proficiency check to see the areas required to be emphasised during the refresher training.

No training

Taking into account all factors we may also decide that you already possesses the required level of instrument proficiency and that no refresher training is necessary. In such after careful reasoning we will issue the  a case we will issue the test recommendation and release you for IR proficiency check with EASA Instrument Rating Examiner. This is usually the case for the pilots with recent instrument rating experience, significant overall experience or being current on similar kind of the operation.

If you are a holder of a valid instrument rating on a pilot licence issued by a third country in accordance with ICAO Annex 1( e.g. FAA license or GCAA license) will be exempted from the refresher training requirement when renewing the EASA Instrument Rating privileges.
