Instrument Rating Multi-Engine extension

IR(A) SE extension to IR(A) ME ✓

The IR Extension training is specifically for you If you are a holder of a single-engine Instrument Rating and the valid multi-engine class rating without IR-ME wishing to obtain a multi-engine instrument rating for the first time.

IR extension is natural and most economical way of obtaining the multi-engine instrument rating as one of the mandatory Frozen ATPL ✓ training path. That's why most of the trainees are the future airline pilots

By attending the Instrument Rating extension training course you will obtain the privileges in accordance with FCL.600.IR(a) - to fly the multi-engine aeroplane under IFR, including PBN operations, with a minimum decision height of no less than 200 feet (60 m). The modular instrument rating training is focused on understanding and properly flying the multi-engine aircraft with one-engine inoperative in accordance with ICAO Doc 8168.

Overview

IR ME extension Training overview

The Instrument Multi-engine extension training course comprises at least 5 hours instruction in instrument flying in multi-engine aeroplanes, of which 3 hours may be in simulator. The flight training is flown in multi-engine aeroplane representing the MEP(land) class rating

The EASA Instrument Rating extension training is followed by the IR Skill test with EASA Instrument Rating Examiner.  The validity of the multi-engine Instrument Rating is 1 year. To revalidate your Instrument Rating you need to comply with FCL.625.IR(b).

Prerequisites

As an applicant for multi-engine Instrument Rating you have to be a holder of the EASA flight crew license such as PPL(A) or CPL(A). You also have be either a holder or to fulfill the training requirements for the multi-engine class rating on which the instrument rating training will be provided including the differences training. It means you need to be a holder of a MEP(land) with differences training on the particular MEP(land) variant such as Diamond DA42 or Tecnam P2006T limited to VFR. You also have to be a holder of theoretical knowledge course completion certificate

The main requirement to undertake this training is to be a holder of valid and current EASA single engine instrument rating.

Simulator

Up to 3 hours of the IR extension flying training course might be done in simulator representing the multi-engine class rating. The simulator time is used for brush-up of your instrument rating skills as well as introduction to the engine-failure after take-off (EFATO), one-engine inoperative (OEI) approach and go-around and in-flight engine shut-down (IFESD).

Aeroplane

The aeroplane training considers your previous instrument rating experience thus the flight training is focused mainly to the operation of an aeroplane with one engine inoperative - so-called OEI. If the simulator is used in addition to the flying training, the minimum time of aeroplane training is 2 hours in MEP(land) aircraft.

The flying part of the IR extension training covers the procedures and manoeuvres for multi-engine IFR operation under normal, abnormal and emergency conditions including inoperative engine covering at least:

  • transition from visual to instrument flight on take-off,
  • standard instrument departures (SID) and arrivals (STAR),
  • en-route IFR procedures focused on multi-engine operations,
  • holding procedures OEI,
  • instrument approaches to specified minima covering ILS, VOR-DME, LOC-DME, NDB and RNP with OEI
  • missed approach procedures with OEI,
  • landings from instrument approaches, including circling;
  • in-flight manoeuvres and particular flight characteristics;

Comparison

The main reason to opt for multi-engine aeroplane for your instrument rating training is the enhanced safety. In the event of an engine failure in IMC or at night it is possible to land the aircraft safely with only one working engine. The disadvantage is about doubled price compared to the single engine IR.
