Competency-based Instrument Rating Multi-Engine

CB-IR(A) ME

The Competency-based instrument rating training course is mostly suitable for private aircraft owners. The reason is that 35 of 45 hours may be completed in the own aircraft and also outside the flight schoolProfiPilot Training rents out its own instructors for the private instrument flying to meet the instrument experience requirements before you enroll into the CB-IR training.

Overview

CB-IR(A) ME training overview

A multi-engine competency-based instrument rating flight training course comprises of 45 hours instrument time under instruction, of which up to 30 hours may be in simulator. Up to 35 hours of flight training with instrument instructor may be credited towards the 45 hours. Thus as less as only 10 hours needs to be flown within ProfiPilot Training to get your full EASA instrument rating for multi-engine aeroplanes. The total amount of dual instrument flight training shall not be less than 25 hours, of which at least 15 hours shall be completed in a multi-engine aeroplane.

The competency-based Instrument Rating training is followed by the IR Skill test with EASA Instrument Rating Examiner.  The validity of the multi-engine Instrument Rating is 1 year. To revalidate your Instrument Rating you need to comply with FCL.625.IR(b).

Prerequisites

Before being enrolled into the EASA competency-based instrument rating flight training course, you have to meet general requirements such as:

  • be a holder of valid Medical Certificate Class 1 or Class 2 with IR privileges (audiogram)
  • be a holder of VFR Night Rating
  • completed at least 50 hours of cross-country flight time as pilot-in-command
  • be qualified on multi-engine single pilot class rating - MEP(Land), e.g. Diamond 42 or Tecnam P2006T

Very important is your previous instrument experience based on what the competency-based instrument rating is done. Your previous instrument experience towards the CB-IR(A) multi-engine can be:

  • completed instrument flight instruction provided by an instrument instructor; or
  • prior experience of instrument flight time as PIC on aeroplanes, under a rating giving the privileges to fly under IFR and in IMC such as being holder of En-route Instrument ratingBasic Instrument Rating or national instrument rating such as IRR or VFR over the top

Should you have prior instrument flight time under instruction other than specified above, these hours may be credited towards the required 45 hours up to a maximum of 15 hours.

How to

Before you are enrolled into the CB-IR(A) flight training in ProfiPilot Training, we are obligated to complete with you the pre-entry assessment. The purpose of pre-entry assessment is to determine the amount of hours credited and to establish your tailored-made training needs.

We can credit all your instrument flight training with an instructor up to the 35 hours out of 45 required. Your competency-based instrument training may last as less as 10 hours in a multi-engine aeroplane at an ProfiPilot Training. Nevertheless the crediting options in case of CB-IR(A) - ME is quite more complex. Our Senior training consultants will allways provide you with tailored-made information.

If you are a holder of an EASA PPL(A) or CPL(A) and at the same time a holder of valid instrument rating IR(A) endorsed in an ICAO license (e.g. FAA) you may be credited in full towards the competency-based training course provided you have at least 50 hours under IFR as PIC on aeroplanes.

Basics

The Basic Instrument Flight of competency-based instrument training consists of similar exercises like the BIFM of the conventional modular instrument rating training course. As a matter of fact, you can complete following exercises with an instrument instructor outside ProfiPilot Training in your own aircraft. As a part of the pre-entry assessment our senior instructor will carefully assess your skills and decide which of the exercises have to be completed as a part of your training under ProfiPilot Training.

The basic instrument flight consists of:

  • basic instrument flight without external visual cues;
  • horizontal flight;
  • climbing;
  • descent;
  • turns in level flight, climbing and descent;
  • instrument pattern;
  • steep turn;
  • radio navigation;
  • recovery from unusual attitudes;
  • limited panel; and
  • recognition and recovery from incipient and full stall;

Procedures

The main reason to opt for multi-engine aeroplane for your instrument rating training is the enhanced safety. In the event of an engine failure in IMC or at night it is possible to land the aircraft safely with only one working engine. That's why you have to learn to fly the IFR procedures with failed engine. The procedural flying part of the competency-based training consists of the pre-flight procedures for IFR flights, including the use of the flight manual and appropriate air traffic services documents for the preparation of an IFR flight plan. You can complete the procedural module with either an instructor outside or inside of ProfiPilot Training. Or even by combination of both.

You will become familiar with an operation of the aeroplane solely by reference to instruments with one engine inoperative (OEI), how to secure an engine including engine shutdown (IFESD) and restart in IMC.

You will learn to fly procedures and manoeuvres for IFR operation under normal, abnormal, and emergency conditions.

  • transition from visual to instrument flight on take-off;
  • standard instrument departures and arrivals;
  • en route IFR procedures;
  • holding procedures;
  • instrument approaches to specified minima;
  • missed approach procedures; and
  • landings from instrument approaches, including circling; in-flight manoeuvres and particular flight characteristics;
