ICAO to EASA Commercial Pilot Licence

To fly commercially you need to be a holder of at least a Commercial Pilot Licence. The CPL conversion procedure is mostly queried by pilots with less experience from abroad or by those who for some reason can not get the local ATPL(A) for whatever reason.

EASA however does not allow direct conversion from ICAO CPL(A) to EASA CPL(A). AlthoughProfiPilot Training brings you the solution carefully designed for you as an ICAO CPL holder. We will overcome together the problem and allow you to be fully commercially certified to fly in Europe.

However it is not possible to convert your ICAO CPL(A) directly into EASA CPL(A). The process has multi-level concept. First you have to obtain the EASA PPL(A) which after you will be enrolled into regular EASA CPL(A) modular course.

The training consists of:

  • theoretical knowledge instruction
  • class rating flight training and familiarization with an EASA airspace;
  • CPL(A) modular flight training course

The CPL(A) conversion training is followed by the written exams and CPL(A) Skill test with EASA Flight Examiner.

Prerequisites

By converting your ICAO CPL(A) into an EASA you may become so-called Frozen ATPL. To convert your ICAO CPL(A) into EASA CPL(A) you have to meet following criteria:

  • hold a valid ICAO ATPL(A), CPL(A) or PPL(A)
  • pass 14 written exams at Exam institute
  • have completed at least 100 hours of flight time as a pilot (optional)

Procedure

The procedure to obtain the EASA Commercial Pilot Licence based on your ICAO CPL(A) consists of following steps:

  1. obtain EASA PPL(A)
  2. attend CPL or ATPL theoretical knowledge instruction atProfiPilot Training
  3. pass 14 written exams at Exam institute
  4. obtain an EASA Class 1 Medical Certificate
  5. undergo required flight training at ProfiPilot Academy
  6. pass a CPL(A) skill test with EASA Flight Examiner
  7. submit all paperwork to the EASA National Aviation Authority (NAA) and apply for your new EASA CPL(A) licence

Training

The flight training inProfiPilot Training is tailored-made to your needs. Generally it is split into two phases. First phase starts with PPL(A) issue. Once you have your EASA PPL(A) we will credit your previous flight time towards an EASA CPL(A) requirements and you will be enrolled into the Phase 2, which in fact is the EASA Modular CPL(A) course.

The CPL skill test can only be taken in single-pilot VFR operations on SEP Land or MEP Land. That's why we have to make sure you meet the requirements for issue the respective class rating. If you have 100 hours on particular class rating, we can credit those experience towards your class rating.

Final product

Upon the ICAO to CPL conversion procedure, you will become a holder of a full EASA CPL(A) with endorsed SEP Land or MEP Land class rating. It means you will be able to fly commercially as a pilot in EASA airspace.  The validity of the CPL(A) is unlimited and stays valid as long as you keep valid your EASA Class 1 Medical and valid class rating. 

To be allowed to take the EASA ab-initio type rating training you also have to attend the instrument rating conversion course. Once you are certified as CPL(A) with Instrument Rating on Multi-Engine, you are considered to be so-called Frozen ATPL. Holding an EASA CPL(A) gives you following privileges to fly:

  • for your own, with your friends and loved ones
  • for fun such as aerobatics or towing a gliders
  • as a Captain in high-performance single-pilot certified aeroplanes such as Cessna 525 even with passengers in CAT
  • as a co-pilot in multi-pilot aeroplanes such as Bombardier CRJ Series or Boeing 737
  • as an Instructor - FI(A), CRI SEP, CRI MEP, IRI(A), TRI after meeting additional criteria
