Instrument Rating Instructor extension

Your IRI in full capability ✓

Once obtained, your Instrument Rating Instructor privileges are usually so-called restricted to provide the instruction in simulator. To extend your IRI privileges into the full scope, you need to meet further requirements of Part-FCL. Together with ProfiPilot Academy you can master your IRI(A) privileges and use it up to the full opportunities it brings.

Overview

IRI extension overview

Instrument Rating Instructor obtained for the very first time is usually restricted to provide the instruction in simulator only. Similar like other instructor certificates, the capability and privileges of IRI will be extended gradually with gaining experience.

When it comes to IRI(A) we are specifically talking about following extensions:

  • removal of restriction to simulator instruction only
  • extension of IRI(A) privileges to multi-engine aeroplanes
  • extension of IRI(A) privileges to MPL(A)

The extension of your IRI(A) to multi-engine aeroplanes and extension to MPL(A) requires additional training whilst the removal of simulator restriction requires gaining the flying experience only.

Unrestricted

 You can become an IFR instructor with as less experience as 200 hours under IFR. In such case your IRI(A) is restricted to instruction to simulators only. In order to remove the restriction, you have to complete at least 800 hours of flight time under IFR, of which at least 400 hours shall be in aeroplanes.

There is no need to attend any further training or checking.

Multi-engine

To extend your Instrument Rating Instructor privileges from single-engine to multi-engine, you need to comply with FCL.915.IRI(a)(3). It means to comply with the requirements of points FCL.915.CRI(a), FCL.930.CRI and FCL.935.

Namely, you have to attend 5 hours of flight training which corresponds to the CRI Multi-Engine training. The CRI single-engine to multi-engine extension training completion is followed by the CRI assessment of competence with EASA Flight Instructor Examiner which needs to be done in simulated IMC.

  • hold an instrument rating for multi-engine aeroplanes;
  • have completed at least 1 500 hours of flight time in multi-crew operations.

Again, there is no need to undertake any additional training or checking.
