CPL for MPL holders

To become single-pilot certified ✓

You have reached the cockpit of an airliner by quickest possible way as a Multi-Pilot Licence holder. Holding a MPL(A) is on one side very beneficial on the other side it brings many restrictions especially when it comes to the single-pilot flying. You are basically halted from the single-pilot operations at all. If you as a MPL(A) holder or at the later stage as ATPL(A) holder based on MPL(A) license want to fly a small Cessna 152 you have to undertake this CPL training for MPL holders.

By attending this course you will become single-pilot certified, so you will be able to fly a single-pilot aeroplane within the class rating SEP Land or MEP Land. This training is also required for an airline pilots wishing to fly small business jets certified as single-pilot such as Cessna 525.

Overview

CPL(A) for MPL(A) training overview

The aim of the CPL(A) for MPL(A) training course is to train you as an airliner and MPL(A) holder to the level of proficiency necessary to exercise the privileges of Commercial Pilot Licence in single-pilot operations.

The training consists of 15 hours of dual, visual flight training.

The CPL(A) for MPL training can be flown by using the multi-engine aeroplane or single-engine aeroplane. Nevertheless you have to obtain the class rating prior the CPL(A) training. 5 hours will be flown in so-called complex aeroplane (variable pitch propeller, retractable undercarriage and at least 4 seats)

The CPL(A) for MPL training is followed by the CPL(A) skill test with EASA Fllight Examiner.  The validity of the CPL(A) privileges is unlimited and stays valid as long as you keep valid your Class 1 Medical certificate along with your class rating.

In addition to your MPL(A) privileges you will be granted all privileges of a Commercial Pilot. So besides your current MPL(A) privileges and type rating, by holding a CPL(A) you can act as a pilot on board of commercially operated aircraft in the Commercial Air Transport (CAT) under the holder of Air Operator Certificate (AOC).

Your privileges as a Commercial Pilot Licence holder will be to to:

  • exercise all the privileges of an LAPL(A) and a PPL(A) holders.
  • act as pilot-in-command or co-pilot of any aircraft engaged in operations other than commercial air transport (in so-called Non-Commercial Operations (NCC);

  • act as Co-pilot in Commercial Air Transport (CAT) subject to the restrictions specified in FCL.060.

By translating it into the plain language, it means your privileges are to fly:

Reasons

Once obtained your MPL(A) the privileges are very limited in accordance with FCL.405.A. The privileges of the MPL(A) holder are to act as co-pilot in an aeroplane required to be operated with a co-pilot. It means you can fly only multi-pilot aeroplanes. Usually your MPL is also restricted to one particular operator and type rating. The instrument rating of MPL(A) holder is also  limited to aeroplanes required to be operated with a co-pilot - it means the multi-pilot IR.

To obtain privileges such as PPL(A)CPL(A) and single-pilot IR(A) an MPL(A) holder has to:

  • meet the requirements for the PPL(A) specified in Subpart C of Part-FCL;
  • meet the requirements of FCL.325.A in order to be granted the CPL(A) privileges
  • complete the training necessary to act as PIC in SPO and passe the IR(A) skill test with EASA IRE(A) in SPO to obtain IR single-pilot
