FI(A) for Instrument Rating

IRI(A) privileges for your FI(A) ✓

Extension of your flight instructor privileges for instrument rating instruction is the natural step in your FI(A) career path. This training is usually taken by the pilots, whose pilot career has been started by doing the instructor job. After some time spent in an airline environment, pilots are usually coming back to the flight schools and attending the FI(A) - IR extension to keep the touch with "small aeroplanes".

By attending FI(A) extension training course you will become authorized to provide the flight training towards the instrument rating ✓ enroute instrument rating basic instrument rating . In addition you will be authorized to provide the instrument instruction required for competency-based instrument rating

Overview

FI(A) IR extension overview

The aim of the FI(A) Instrument Rating extension training course is to bring your competency up to the standard required for the role of an instrument rating instructor.  The FI - IR extension training course emphasis on the role of the individual in relation to the importance of human factors in the man-machine environment. Special attention is given to your level of maturity and judgement including an understanding of adults, their behavioural attitudes and variable levels of education.

The training course consists of technical training and flight instruction: 

  • 10 hours of Instrument Technical theoretical knowledge instruction (Technical training);
  • 10 hours of Flight instruction

The training course is followed by the IRI assessment of competence with EASA Flight Instructor Examiner.

Prerequisites

To extend your FI(A) privileges to instrument rating instruction you have to be a holder of flight crew license with valid medical certificate and respective SEP(land) or MEP(land) class ratings with class-related instrument rating. From the experience point of view, you must have completed at least 200 hours of IFR flight time, of which a maximum of 50 hours may be instrument time in simulator.

Briefings

The theoretical knowledge instruction comprises of 10 hours consisting of revision of knowledge, the preparation of lesson plans and the development of classroom instructional skills. By doing this you will be enabled to instruct the instrument theoretical knowledge syllabus.

All the subject contained in the theoretical and flight training syllabus is complementary to the instrument rating pilot course syllabus which should already be familiar to you from your previous instrument rating training. The objective of the FI(A) - IR training course is to:

  • refresh and bring up to date your technical knowledge;
  • you to be able to train your students in accordance with the requirements of the modular instrument flying training course;
  • enable to develop your necessary instructional techniques required for teaching of instrument flying, radio navigation and instrument procedures to the level required for the issue of an instrument rating; and
  • ensure that the your flying is of a sufficiently high standard.

Flying

The flight instruction aims to ensure that you will be able to teach the air exercises safely and efficiently. The FI(A) - IR extension training course comprises of 5 hours of flight instruction. Additional time is used for the instruction and practice of preflight and post-flight briefing for each exercise.

You will become master in teaching following exercises as required by AMC1 FCL.930.IRI, Part 3:

  • Basic Instrument Flying
  • Advanced Instrument Flying
  • Applied Radio Navigation (VOR, NDB, VHF/DF, DME, SSR, ENR Radar)
  • Standard instrument Departures and Arrivals (SID, STAR)
  • Instrument Approaches (ILS, NDB, RNP)

AIRBUS A320 TYPE RATING program structure The course consists of Airbus A320 Type Rating (theory and full flight simulator training), followed by Base Training and an optional job interview preparation course.
