Modular CPL(A) training is a completion of long-lasting modular CPL training. By being CPL certified, you will become a professional pilot, so you will be able to earn a money by having a pilot job. There is no time how long it should take from PPL(A) or even LAPL(A) up to the CPL(A). That's why we will cover a comprehensive exercised in this module. The CPL(A) modular training is usually the option for a pilots reaching their pilot training path a bit slower due to different reasons.

If you are in addition a holder of an instrument rating for multi-engine aeroplanes by getting the CPL(A) you will get your third stripe on your shoulder and reach your Frozen ATPL(A) qualification.

Overview

Modular CPL(A) training overview

The aim of the CPL(A) modular flight training course is to train you as a PPL(A) holder to the level of proficiency necessary for the issue of a Commercial Pilot Licence.

The training consists of:

  • 15 hours of flight training for instrument-rated pilots or BIFM holders
  • 25 hours of flight training for VFR Night - rated pilots
  • 30 hours of flight training for pilots without VFR NightBIFM and IR

The CPL(A) training can be flown by using the multi-engine aeroplane or single-engine aeroplane. Nevertheless you have to obtain the class rating prior the CPL(A) training. 5 hours will be flown in so-called complex aeroplane (variable pitch propeller, retractable undercarriage and at least 4 seats). The training has to be completed within 18 months.

The CPL(A) training is followed by the CPL(A) skill test with EASA Fllight Examiner.  The validity of the CPL(A) is unlimited and stays valid as long as you keep valid your Class 1 Medical certificate. Skill test need to be completed within the period of validity of the pass in the theoretical examinations.

Criteria

To be enrolled into the CPL(A) modular training course you have to be at least 18 years old and hold valid ICAO-issued PPL(A) license along with your current Class 1 Medical Certificate. You have to be a holder of valid CPL(A) or ATPL(A) theoretical knowledge exam certificate (within the period of 36 months after passed the last subject).

It is important to mention that there is a minimum flight experience required to be enrolled into the CPL(A) modular flight training. Before being enrolled into the CPL(A) flight training course you have had completed 150 hours flight time including 50 hours as PIC on aeroplanes of which 10 hours shall be cross-country.

Flying

 The EASA Commercial Pilot Licence consists of 30 hours of flight training. Its purpose is to brush-up your skills and proficiency. The time to complete your Frozen ATPL(A) path could took even 10+ years long. Because of that the CPL training covers profile of basics of flying techniques related to traffic patterns, cross-country VFR flying and handling an aircraft including the Upset Prevention and Recovery Training. 5 hours of the flight training will be flown in an aeroplane certificated for the carriage of at least 4 persons and have a variable pitch propeller and retractable landing gear.

The Modular CPL training covers four Phases containing following:

Phase 1 - Aircraft Handling and cross-country

  • take-off, landing and traffic patterns including pre-flight preparation
  • cross wind operation (landing, go-around and take-off)
  • peak performance (short field and obstacle clearance) take-offs and short-field landings
  • simulated emergencies and engine-failures at different phases of flight
  • cross country flying including the instrument navigation elements

Phase 2 -UPRT

  • Basic UPRT

Phase 3 - Instrument Flight

  • instrument exercises (Basic Instrument Flight Module) - credited for IR and BIFM holders

Phase 4 - Night Flying

  • VFR Night - credited for VFR Night rating holders

Prerquisites

Following requirements apply for issue of your CPL(A) license. So ProfiPilot Training does not require you to meet those hours before being enrolled into the CPL(A) flight training course, however you will have to meet following in order to be issued Commercial Pilot License.

The applicant for a CPL(A) shall have completed at least 200 hours flight time. Your PIC hours from other categories of aircraft (such as helicoptersAirships, etc) may be credited towards 200 hours of required flight time.

Your aeroplane flying experience shall include at least:

  • 100 hours as pilot-in-command, of which 20 hours of cross-country flight as PIC, which shall include a VFR cross-country flight of at least 540 km (300 NM), in the course of which full stop landings at two aerodromes different from the aerodrome of departure shall be made;
  • 5 hours of flight time at Night during VFR (full credit for VFR Night rating), comprising 3 hours of dual instruction, which shall include at least 1 hour of cross-country navigation and 5 solo take-offs and 5 solo full stop landings; and
  • 10 hours of instrument training (full credit for BIFM or Instrument Rating or BIR), of which up to 5 hours may be instrument ground time in a simulator;
  • 6 hours of flight time in a MEP Land (optional), if a multi-engine aeroplane is used for the CPL(A) skill test.

Privileges

As a Commercial Pilot you become a professional pilot. So by holding a CPL(A) you can act as a pilot on board of commercially operated aircraft in the Commercial Air Transport (CAT) under the holder of Air Operator Certificate (AOC). 

Your privileges as a Commercial Pilot Licence holder are to:

  • exercise all the privileges of an LAPL(A) and a PPL(A) holders.
  • act as pilot-in-command or co-pilot of any aircraft engaged in operations other than commercial air transport (in so-called Non-Commercial Operations (NCC);
  • act as Commander in Commercial Air Transport (CAT) of any single-pilot aircraft subject to the restrictions specified in FCL.060;
  • act as Co-pilot in Commercial Air Transport (CAT) subject to the restrictions specified in FCL.060.

By translating it into the plain language, it means your privileges are to fly:

  • for your own, with your friends and loved ones
  • for fun such as aerobatics or towing a gliders
  • as a Captain in high-performance single-pilot certified aeroplanes such as Cessna 525 even with passengers in CAT
  • as a co-pilot in multi-pilot aeroplanes such as Bombardier CRJ Series or Boeing 737
  • as an Instructor - FI(A), CRI SEP, CRI MEP, IRI(A), TRI after meeting additional criteria
