Flight Instructor

The Flight Instructor is usually a very first job the freshly certified professional pilots land into. Under the EASA flight crew licensing scheme, the Flight Instructor certificate - FI(A) offers a very complex scheme of development of the instructor privileges. In some cases, your total flight experience is the main requirement, in some other cases your instructional experience or the experience in some specific operational time is required.

The complexity of the Flight Instrucotr privileges may be easily misunderstood and misinterpreted. Therefore we introduced the Flight Instructor development roadmap to understand the privileges of the Flight InstructorFI(A) certificate endorsed in the flight crew licence.

Flight Instructor Training

The very first step on the flight instructor career path is to obtain the flight instructor (aeroplanes) certificate or simply the FI(A). To do so you need to attend the specific training. During the FFI(A) training you will develop your instructor competences to be able to provide the flight instruction for the private pilot training and light aircraft pilot training. The FI(A) training consists of the exercises you will be completing with yourLAPL(A) and PPL(A) students on a routine basis.
The FI(A) course is a competency-based training focused on the development of the core instructor competences. The special emphasis will be on your ability to teach the PPL/LAPL theoretical knowledge as well as to teach the long briefingsflying exercises and debriefing of theLAPL(A) and PPL(A) exercises. Upon completion of the course you will be allowed to provide the training for LAPL(A) and PPL(A) in single-engine piston class in VFR day. First 100 hours you will be restricted to provide the flight instruction under the supervision of the senior instructor who will be appointed to you by the flight school. As a restricted flight instructor, you will also not be allowed to let the student fly first solo.

02. FI UNR
FI(A) Unrestricted

Once become a flight instructor, the privileges of your FI(A) will be restricted to provide the flight training for LAPL(A) and PPL(A) in SEP(land) only and only under the supervision of the senior instructor. To shift your restriction you will have to provide at least 100 hours of the flight training and to supervise 25 solo flights of the students under the supervision of your supervising instructor. This is so-called flight instructor development program and the on-job training commonly know different jobs such as scuba diver instructor assistant or a junior attorney associate.
You are constantly couched by the flight instructor with significantly more experience, which is helping to develop your instructor competences and to get more skills in providing the flight training. The aim of this phase of your flight instructor development course is to shift the restriction called FCL.910.FI. This experience can only be obtained under the approved training organisation or declared training organisation. Thus you need to be appointed to one of the EASA flight schools.

FI(A) - Extensions for VFR Night, Aerotow or Aerobatics

The natural development of the flight instructor career is to extend the instructor privileges to the other kinds of the trainings. Following trainings do not require any kind of specialized training - Flight Instructor for Aerotowing trainingFlight Instructor for VFR Night training and Flight Instructor for Aerobatics training. Only requirement is to demonstrate your ability to teach towards the ratings to the senior flight instructor qualified to teach towards that rating and towards the instructor certification.
The most common way of Flight Instructor development is to become a VFR Night instructor. Flying in night and giving the instructor to the trainee in night is like a fresh wind and motivation for an instructor who sat more then 100 hours in the aircraft doing the traffic patterns with a newbies.

04. FI CPL
FI(A) for Commercial Pilot training

The training towards a Commercial Pilot Licence is a bit more demanding compared to what the flight instructor was used to do up until now - the PPL(A) or LAPL(A). The CPL(A) flight training is about fine-tuning the skills of the future professional pilot, therefore you need to have a bit more of instructional experience to do the job properly.
The extension of flight instructor privileges to CPL(A) training requires you to complete at least 200 hours of the flight instruction as flight instructor. There is no requirement for an additional checkride or assessment. Only the administrative application to your authority along with an evidence of your logbook to confirm your 200 flight instructor time.

The more instructional experience you get, the further you can extend your flight instructor privileges. Besides being a good pilot, to teach the future instructors requires the advanced instructor competences, through knowledge of PPL(A) and LAPL(A) training syllabi as well as being able to explain what are the common mistakes of the students in the each respective phase of LAPL(A) and PPL(A) trainings. Therefore you need to have a vast instructional experience to be able to do so.
The major change in delivering the instructor training is not only change of the instructor seat (who will now occupy the seat usually assigned to the trainee), but the overall training structure. You are now going to train the trainer. That is a very responsible role as you will be directly influencing the safety of aviation future.
Based on your privileges, your Flight Instructor privileges will be extended to to provide the trainings to the Class Rating InstructorsInstrument Rating InstrucotrsFlight Instructors and Mountain Instructors provided you hold the same instructor privileges.
To extend your Flight Instructor certificate to instructor privileges, you need to complete at least 500 hours of flight instruction as a flight instructor and attend the specific instructor assessment of competence with Flight Instructor Examiner specifically focused on the train the trainer role.

Flight Instructor - Instrument Rating

Most of the flight instructors they will get an airline or bizav job in the meanwhile which allows them to complete the necessary requirements, skills and proficiency of becoming the flight instructor for the instrument rating. Otherwise is might be a very hard to get the minimum 200 hours of IFR flight time.
The real-life IFR operational experience is an added value that the flight instructor can bring to his students and it is the usual development of the flight instructor career path. The training to become a flight instructor for instrument rating consists of 5 hours of the training and additional IRI(A) assessment of competence with Flight Instructor Examiner.
Usual flight instructor development which comes along with the instrument rating instructor privileges is the privilege to teach on the multi-engine aeroplanes to be able to provide complete instrument rating training for aspiring professional pilots. The extension of instructor privileges to the multi-engine aeroplanes requires additional 5 hours of training and an assessment of competence with FIE(A) focused on the privileges of FI(A) on MEP(land) class rating.

MPL(A) Flight Instructor

The Multi-pilot licence is one of the most sofisticated trainings in the aviation industry. The aim is to provide the trainee with the training from the 0 up to the cockpit of the jetliner in a very short period of time as well as with straight-forward track without necessity to fly the conventional modular course.
Therefore the flight instructor providing some specific phases of the Multi-pilot training needs to have the vast experience as flight instructor providing the basic trainings. Even the MPL instructor privileges are very structured. Generally, to teach towards the core flying phase training for Multi-pilot licence, you would need to have minimum of 500 hours of flight time as a pilot of aeroplanes, including at least 200 hours as a flight instructor.
For the basic part of the Multi-pilot licence training, you would need to hold a multi-engine aeroplane instrument rating and the flight instructor privileges to instruct for an instrument rating as well as to have at least 1 500 hours of flight time in multi-crew operations.

Flight Examiner

The further development of the flight instructor pathway might be becoming a flight examiner. The flight examiners are responsible for the certification of the pilots and playing the crucial element in overall flight safety. Your task will be to test the pilots and compare their skills in accordance with EASA standards.
Although there are the minimum requirements for the Flight Examiners, the certification of examiners is also strictly regulated. To become a flight examiner, one must be a flight instructor. However not each flight instructor must become a flight exmainer.
Usually the first appointment as a Flight examiner comes with the test privileges for LAPL and PPL(A) in class rating SEP(land). The more flight hours as flight instructor you gain, the further the flight examiner will be extended.
To become a flight examiner for LAPL, you need at least 500 hours of total time and 100 hours as an instructor, while for PPL(A) you would need to complete at least 1000 hours of total time and 250 hours of flight training.
